Yep, it's one of those days...

  • Do I really need to say anything about Britney Spears' follicle follies? Why yes... yes I do. After a week of seeing every two-bit hustler line up to claim to be the baby-daddy of Anna Nicole Smith's semi-orphaned child (Gah, you know this is gonna end up on "Maury" eventually), it was nice to get this little diversion. I'd be a little happier if Britney were aiming to go off on a "Ani DiFranco/Sinead O'Conner vibe" for her career, but it seems more like she's hoppin' the crazy train for the Chateau Marmont and looking for the John Belushi Memorial Suite.
  • Speaking of ingenues heading down a one-way road, I finally watched "Mean Girls" last night, and I have to say Lindsay Lohan was pretty good in it. She might even be able to develop into a first-rate actress if she can ever conquer her demons. The scene where she drinks herself into vomitory bliss was more than a wee bit ironic, given her current situation.
  • T-two days until my septoplasty, and I'm feeling a bit nervous. I know it's a fairly common procedure, but I am still nervous about being anesthetized and having someone mess with my honker.
  • The Endor Holocaust. Discuss.
Everybody have fun tonight.

Finishing Up the Week With a Few Things

So I'm a day late on this. Meh...

  • Our power problems continued Thursday evening, when I came home for lunch and the lights were out again. I picked up Ian that night and went to Kathy's office in anticipation of the three of us "camping out" that night. Kathy called about 7 to tell me that the lights were back on, and I went to pick up a pizza in celebration. On our way home, Kat called me AGAIN to tell me the lights had gone out again! Went back to the pizza parlor, Kathy joined me and Ian to eat the pizza, and then we headed back to get the supplies we knew we'd need for the night, only to find that the lights were on AGAIN!!! At that point, we said "fark it", and stayed home. Luckily the lights stayed on.
  • Y'know, the word "again" looks a little weird. Don't know why; the thought just struck me.
  • I spent much of Thursday afternoon and Friday morning cataloging my blog posts into categories. I noticed that so far, the most popular category for my postings is "Meme". I gotta stop taking so many online quizzes.
  • Britney Spears shaved her head last night. Now, I'd like to chalk this up to trying to establish some indie cred for her music comeback, but given that she just went through the Lindsey Lohan Revolving Rehab Door, methinks Ms. Fed-Ex is on her way to a stay at a somewhat more stringent institution.

Saturday Night's Alright for Bloggin'

What's been going on in my life? Glad you asked...

I'm going to finally get my operation to correct my deviated septum. A little more than a week from now, I'll go into the hospital and have the nose corrected that has been giving my endless trouble for the past couple of decades, at least. From all indications, it'll be a week of hellish recovery, followed by sweet, sweet nasal bliss. I'm just hoping it leads to a much softer snore and a healthier me.

I traveled over to help out another paper this week. They were having problems getting their photos to come out well, or at least as well as ours. I helped out as much as I could technically, but I think the problems may stem from something a bit deeper than that. I'm not saying my work environment is perfect, but I definitely sensed a bit of tension and ill will in their workplace, and it wasn't necessarily just cause I was there.

Meanwhile, I've been battling a cold for the past week, and as a result, my exercise program has gone south a bit. I'm hoping to resume Monday, but I don't know what shape I'll be in for the 5k in March. We'll see. We'll see.

Eine Kleine Updaten

OK, a few things to start of the month of February:

  • My good friend Josh has started a new blog, dedicated to politics. He says it'll be a bit Boston-centric (seeing as he's from Woosta), but it should make for a good read. Link is in my blogroll, or you can go here.
  • Speaking of people who make provincial politics interesting, I was saddened to hear that Molly Ivins has passed away. I first got into her when I was in college. Her columns on the Texas Legislature were classic, and she was the first to refer to The Only President We Have as "Shrub." Goodnight, Molly; hope you and Claytie are knockin' back a few in the great beyond and laughing over old times.
  • I'm being treated for sleep apnea. A couple of weeks ago, I went to a sleep center to be analyzed, and found out yesterday that I am borderline high on for apnea. My ENT wants me to get another study (this time with a CPAP), but because of my deviated septum, I need to have that fixed first. I'll keep you updated.
  • I have lost 10 pounds over the past month, as part of my New Year's resolutions. I am also training myself to run in my first race in many of years. It's a 5k, so it should be relatively low impact for me, but I'm keeping my eye on running in a marathon in September. Wish me luck.
More later.

Just a few quick things to note as I try to get through the Holiday Season:

  • Kathy is currently doing the DMA tour (currently at UGA), and I'm spending lots of time with Ian. Unfortunately, he seems to have finally found the "terrible" part of his Terrible Twos. Thankfully, my honey will be home tonight. Hopefully.
  • I found out earlier this week that Martin Nodell passed away. I wasn't aware of who he was either, until I heard that he created Green Lantern. GL was one of my favorite comic book characters growing up. I still would like to get a tattoo of the Green Lantern symbol one day.
  • Peter Boyle's passing was a little shocking, but not unexpected. I remember seeing him on an episode of Mind of Mencia and thinking, "Man, he's not looking too good". Little did I know. I also was not aware of the connection between him and John Lennon, nor of his training as a monk. Goodbye, Mr. Boyle.
  • Soy makes you teh ghey?
  • 11 days until Christmas. I have some things to say about the alleged "War on Christmas", but I'll wait until I get my thoughts together a bit better.
  • Anthony Field, aka Anthony Wiggle, has announced his retirement from the group. In kids' music parlance, this is like hearing The Beatles are breaking up. 'Course, by the time Ian knows about it and can understand, he'll probably be full on into Zambian death rap-metal-yodel fusion. In the meantime, I gotta relearn their names: Jeff, Murray, Greg, and Sam.
That's all I have for the moment. Talk amongst yourselves.

New Baby Blues

No, I don't really have the "baby blues", but I couldn't think of a better title.

OK, I'm gonna try to maintain this blog a little more regularly than I have in the past. We'll see if I can't keep things going here.

I have to say off the bat that Ian has definitely changed my life (and Kathy's as well). When I go to work in the morning, I can't leave without picking him up and giving him a big hug. The look in his eyes when I feed him makes me feel so grand, and yet so small at the same time. I can't imagine how I ever got through this life without Ian.

In other aspects of my life, I'm feeling really confident about John Kerry and John Edwards' chances in the election this November. The part of Virginia we're living in is a pretty conservative area, and yet when I ride through town I see so many Kerry bumper stickers on cars, and so few for Bush/Cheney. Maybe it's not the most accurate indicator of people's feelings on the election, but I think it's pretty damn significant.

That's all for the moment. More later on this CBS station.

Falling Down

I know that it's been a while, but between the impending blessed event and dealing with family issues, I haven't really felt inspired to blog much.

So much to write about, but I'll just kinda touch the stones and let you figure out where they lay:

*Dad, I know you're not reading this, but I just wanted to let you know I loved you once and may find it in my heart to love you again. At this moment, however, I just hope you get what you deserve.

*"War is all Hell", or so William Sherman once said. If this administration becomes remembered for anything, it will most likely be for the can of worms it opened up in the Fertile Crescent.

*I miss my friends. I miss the late nights, the trips to Waffle House, the inebriated dancing, the sober philosophy; I miss it all.

*Dammitaltahell, Jennifer or LaToya should have won. I'm glad for Fantasia, though.

*I find myself occasionally thinking of the Big Talks I will be having with Ian in the next two decades, and what it is I'll say to him. Other times, I try to think back to imagine what my parents were going through as I was about to make my debut in the world.

*The highway is alive tonight
But nobody's kiddin' nobody about where it goes
I'm sittin' down here in the campfire light
Searchin' for the ghost of Tom Joad

Rock n Roll McDonald's!! Rock n Roll McDonalds!!!

I just noticed this morning that Blogger has done some interface improvements. Goody-goody-gumdrops! Well, lemme give you a Clintster update and see how this thang works, 'kay?

So, things are continuing to develop with our pregnancy. Kathy's hormones have kicked in and I've been trying to keep up with her moods and encourage her when she feels down and tired. I finally got the baby's stroller put together, so there's one more thing off the list.

It looks as if I will have to cut down the number of visits I make to my therapist. I've been going every week, but with our financial worries, I've decided to make it every other week. Another factor in my decision is the fact that I feel better as I've been going through therapy, and I actually felt myself struggling to find something to talk about at my last session.

Oh, and by the way... Wesley Willis whips Batman's, Superman's, and Saddam Hussein's ass! Believe that!

Corn-You-Copia

Sorry, things have been pretty damn busy lately, and I haven't had a chance to catch up on my blogging. So, what's kept me so preoccupied?

1) Baby stuff! Kathy got an "all clear" on her various tests for birth defects, which is definite good news. She also had another ultrasound, and we now know the gender of the turtle. No fair telling what it is, at least not yet. For more details on this, go to The Married Life.

2) Mock Con! This past weekend, I had the pleasure of covering W&L's quadrennial Mock Convention, where the students of the university try to predict which candidate the unpresidented party that year will pick as its nominee. This year, they picked John Kerry and John Edwards as their ticket. We'll see if it bears out. By the by, I've always wanted to go to a political convention and take photos. Hopefully I can go to one of the big boys some day.

3) Super Bowl!!! I went out to a local bar to watch SB XXXVIII, after unsuccessfully trying to get a party together. Turns out, it was pretty damn cool sharing the experience with strangers. Coincidentally, I went to a bar to watch the Bowl two years ago, when the patriots were in it, and when they won it on a last-second field goal. The difference this time (among others) was I was rooting for their opponents. Sorry, but I had to cheer for the Panthers come Hell or high water.

4) That's about it. Maybe I'll write more later.

And We're gonna go to Boone...

And then to Roanoke, and Lexington, and Charlottesville, and Davisboro, and Aiken, and Tampa, and San Antonio, and Beech Mountain, and then we're gonna go to Washington DC, and we're gonna take back the White House!!! YEAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I've just spent the past half-hour listening to remixes of Howard Dean's concussion-- I mean concession speech following the Iowa caucus. :) If you want to hear some of them, click here. Some of them are pretty hilarious.

Anyway, if you've been to my honey's blog, you know that she's made it through her final jury before her final grad recital, and I don't know which of us is more relieved, me or her. Honestly, it's pretty rough being a diva's consort, let me tell you! :P

I promised a few words on the President's SOTU speech from earlier this week, and here they are as follows:

Ehh. Meh. Kinda goofy. Loved the reaction to his "parts of the Patriot Act will expire in a matter of months" line. I think it hurt him more than it helped. That's all.

On a sadder note, Bob Keeshan, aka Captain Kangaroo died today. It's sad to think that he and Mr. Rogers are no more.

More later. And seriously, dude, go and listen to the Deano Machino remixes.

There's a Sale at Penney's!

I promised an update on my so-called life, and by God, here it is!

Work's going okay right now, if a bit slow. We're currently running around like chickens with our heads cut off trying to get entries ready for the Virginia Press Association awards. I have four photos (so far) entered for VPA consideration, and that may increase if my editor Darryl decides to submit more stuff.

Kath and I are getting excited about our upcoming bundle of joy. She's almost moved out of her "morning sickness" phase and it shows on her face big time. She came to the office the other day to drop off some chocolate, and later one of the receptionists told me how she saw a sparkle in Kathy's eye and a glow in her face. :) Kathy kinda brushed it off, but it's true: she is just looking gorgeous (in my eye, anyway) in her pregnancy right now.

We had our first experience with a cleaning lady yesterday. Kathy has been used to one from when she was living with her mom in NC, but this is the first one I didn't have to call "Mom". She did a good job, although she wasn't able to finish everything we had on our "to-do" list. Still in all, the inside looks a devil of a site better than it did a few days ago.

Finally, we have a bad cat, and it's not the one we expected. Our oldest cat, Katie has been rather prominent in our daily lives lately (See Kathy's blog for some recent anecdotes). However, in the past few days, she has taken to wedging herself into crawlspaces and mewling until we get her out. Is it some kind of punishment for leaving her for 5 days while we went to Charleston? Is it some kind of cat intuition about the impending baby? Who knows? All I know is, if she weren't so darn funny, she'd be out on the street with a "FREE to a good home" sign around her neck. Goofy cat!

Well, that's all I got at this moment.

Hump-day!

What's been going on in my life? Glad you asked...

* I've been taking photos of quite a bit of stuff lately. Basically, if you see a dead animal in the News-Gazette, it's mine. Hunting season has begun, and so it seems every hunter with a n eight-point buck has come by here looking for a photo op. I've also taken some photos of big-ass fish. Yay.

* I've also seen an increase in the number of people requesting my photographic services. A couple of people have inquired on my availability for weddings, I've been asked to do someone's portrait, and someone else wants me to teach them phtographic techniques. Just today I had a law firm call me about taking photos for their web site. Cool, eh?

* I got an interesting letter in the mail yesterday. It was an invitation to join the AARP. Yes, THAT one! Wanna feel like you're about 15 years older than you really are? Wait for that first letter to come in the mail. Yikers!

So, how are y'all?

Manic Monday (a la Larry King)

I gave my notice at Ruby Tuesday last night. The next two weeks should be fun, but mot as much fun as living on my solo income (please God, send me some wedding work SOON!).

Still hasn't snowed here YET, unlike in Massachusetts, but something tells me that it's a-comin' soon.

The Marlins won the World Series. Yay. Now, move out of the way so's I can watch some football. :P

Well, it appears next time Bill O'Really whines about the "liberal smear merchants" in our company, he'll have to include someone on the Fox payroll. Seriously, someone might get confused between Faux News and The Simpsons? Do they really think Americans are that stupid?

:watches Fox News for a second:

Never mind.

The wrap of the week: Chicken (or Worcestershire-seasoned tempeh), tomatoes and spinach, with hummus and pub cheese. Yummy!

Doctor's visit was fine. I need to lose a few lbs. and cut down on taking Sudafed (blood pressure); I also got samples of Allegra and medicine to calm my acid reflux, but otherwise I'm tip-top.

That's all for now.

How to make a good muffuletta

So much happening, so little blogging time:

The weekend was okay, except for the fruitless trip to Boone. Kathy didn't get to have her voice lesson with her prof, for whatever reason. However, we did get to have lunch with my parents, who will hopefully be visiting us soon.

I am still getting over the depression of no Cubs-Red Sox World Series. I haven't seen a WS game yet, and don't plan to. If there were a way BOTH teams could lose it, I'd be satisfied with that.

Just a question: why didn't they offer courses like this when I was in college?

I'm still amazed at the lack of reaction by the public to the first Chinese taikonaut in space. Then again, I'm not at all surprised. When the US and USSR launched their first men into space, it was an entirely new experience. However, the Chinese are about 40 years late to the dance. There's talk that the Chinese are planning on sending men to the moon in the near future, but I don't think even that is going to excite the public re: space exploration.

Quick reviews of some recent DVD rentals/purchases:

Head of State: Funny movie. I just wish a presidential candidate would speak that directly. Hell, I wish any politician would do that.

White Oleander: Pretty good story, although it reminded me of a few women I've known in my life, and the tragedies they've suffered.

Minority Report: A good futuristic film noir. The plot twists were fairly standard, but nicely executed, I thought.

That is all; please return to your routine.

A real update, for once

I know, I know, it's been a while since I've posted anything aside from links and memes, so I thought I'd put up a little bit about what's going on in my life.

Work is fine, although I'm still second-jobbing it at Ruby Tuesday, and haven't gotten any calls regarding weddings for the past month or so. Still there IS a potential gig in November. More info as it develops.

Kathy and I are still in the baby hunt. If things don't start developing soon... I mean, if she doesn't get preggers soon, we may seek the help of a fertility doc. In the meantime I am converting my office into a potential nursery.

Don't have much to say about the latest political happenings, except:
I think Ca-lee-fwoh-nyah is gonna get what it deserves in electing Gov. Ahnold.
I can't make up my mind whether I'm happy or sad about the Rush Limbaugh situation (could this be Schadenfreude?)
The war/peace in Iraq is getting ridiculous.
The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is getting to the point that I will refuse to care about either side.

We finally identified the mysterious pet that hs been pooping in our basement. It's Lovecat. We're debating what to do about it.

Finally, a link for y'all. The NRA has apparently started a blacklist of people, businesses and organizations it considers anti-gun. Well if they want a blacklist, by God, I'm gonna make sure they get a blacklist.

Thursdays... I never could get the hang of Thursdays

First of all, to all the Xanga bloggers out there, welcome back!

Saw on the news that there are now 135 confirmed candidates for governor in California. Add Father Guido Sarducci (aka Don Novello) and professional self-promoter Angelyne to the mix for Gov. Also on the ballot will be Michael Jackson and Richard Simmons, but not the ones you think. In the meantime Ahnold is getting hit on all sides; the liberals don't like him because he's a Republican, and the conservatives don't like him because he's too socially liberal. I'm just glad I live in Virginia, where the state GOP chairman recently had to resign because he wiretapped the state Democratic Party offices.

Oh, and for fans of Hedwig and the Angry Inch (and you know who you are!), there's a tribute CD coming out in October. Should be pretty damn cool!

Monday, March 24, 2003

I just finished watching the Oscars a couple of minutes ago. Nice show, with several surprises (good thing I didn't run an Oscar pool at work!). The thing that got me the most excited was Michael Moore's win for Bowling for Columbine.

After he was snubbed for Roger & Me several years ago, it was great to see him finally win for Best Documetary. I thought it was also a great gesture that he brought all his fellow nominees up with him in a show of solidarity. In case you missed it, this was the point when the sparks really flew. Moore then went on to criticize the Bush administration, essentially calling it a fallacious presidency engaged in a fictitious war. Several in the audience booed him as he made his statement, but I didn't care. On a show where (allegedly) the producers had urged winners and presenters to refrain from making waves with their statements, he more than made up for the silence.

On to more localized news...

I went to Boone (and back in one day) Saturday to meet with our probably videographer. The man and I talked about his background, his process, and of course, his pricing. He even showed me a montage of some of his past work, which I have to say was very well done indeed. I just hope we can actually afford to pay for his services. Here's why:

Kathy is currently more than a bit angry at her father at the moment. She had wanted him to pay for the documentation of the wedding, since her mom was taking care of the reception, and my parents were paying for the rehearsal and dinner. We are taking care of the ceremony proper. Well, when Kathy discussed it with them last night, they balked. Then tonight, her father offered $1500 for the video and photography in lieu of a wedding present. Kathy is more than a little steamed about this, since her father paid out for the rehearsal and a wedding present for her brother at his wedding.

I'm hoping that this can be resolved fairly and peacefully, but just in case, Kathy has already made plans to have her mother walk her down the aisle. We'll have to see how this pans out. But just in case...

Can anyone tape a wedding and/or photograph it for a ridiculously low amount of money?

Wednesday, March 12, 2003

Been a busy week, so lemme gloss over the details...

Kathy and I sang in the RCS's Israel in Egypt. It was great both nights, as was my Honey Bunny Bear. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to sing the first part last night. We ran late getting the paper to bed, and I got there just in time to hear them starting the first act of IiE. Ah well.

The wedding plans are progressing. We have a marryin' place, a receptin' place, and a honeymoonin' place. We're even traveling by train (rrrRRRrooowww!) to our destination, New Orleans. In a private sleeper. Guess, if the train's a-rockin', don't bother knockin. :D

The job is going well. I just wish I had a more convenient place to park in the mornings. I've done a couple of shoots in the past few days. It's just a treat going to a job and not having to put on a name tag or ask if they want fries or baked potato with their newspaper.

In any case, more later, on this CBS station.

Meantime, go here and see our in-progress wedding site.

Thursday, January 23, 2003

I was just flipping through the channels a few minutes ago, when I came across a movie on Turner Classic Movies. It was called Panama Lady, and it was just ending when I came in. There was a young lady in a diner talking very seriously to a gentleman seated across from her.

The lady was quite striking (and surprisingly modern-looking; at first I thought I was seeing a fairly recent black-and-white film, based on her hair and clothes), but she looked familiar. I couldn't place her face, so I hit the info button on my remote.

It was Lucille Ball. Forget what you know about her. Forget the candy factory, the Vitameatavegamin commercial, the towering red hair, THIS was Lucy before Desi. The film itself is kind of a proto-noir, and from what I saw, Lucy could do drama quite well. I was really blown away by how young and promising she looked. Wow.

In other news, there is now a movement to use a plan by one of my all-time favorite architects to replace the World Trade Center. See the story below.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030122/ap_on_re_us/attacks_historic_plans_1
